The Lingerie Addict is Celebrating Its 5 Year Anniversary!

If you'd told me five years ago that my brand-new lingerie obsession would have led to all this, I wouldn't have believed you. This time in 2008, I was a Sociology grad student in Athens, GA. Between reading, researching, and writing papers (and volunteering on the weekends), I started this blog. There wasn't a plan. There wasn't a goal. There really wasn't even a point. I just saw apretty pair of stockings, bought them on a whim, and, later (because my friends had absolutelynointerest in listening to me go on and on about my legwear), decided to write a paragraph or two about them.

I dropped out of grad school a few months after that first blog post, backpacked across Europe, (you can find my short-lived blog about the trip here:99 Days in Europe), and, upon returning, moved to Seattle and back into the non-profit industry. My specialty was crisis work, and over the next several years, I worked with survivors of violent crimes... both adults and children. I won't say it was work I enjoyed (because that sounds a bit strange), but it was meaningful work. And I did like feeling like I was making a difference and helping to make the world a better place.

Unfortunately, I was also really stressed out all the time, and talking about lingerie became an easy, pretty, effortless escape from all the difficult situations I saw every single day. It was such a treat to come home from a hard day behind my desk, and immerse myself in the world of bras and panties for a few hours. You know the rest of the story after that. In 2011, I was able to start blogging full-time, and it's entirely thanks to the support of my readers that I can be an entrepreneur with my dream business.

The Lingerie Addict has followed a non-traditional path to success --- a path I'm deeply proud of. I started writing from the perspective of a consumer faced with tons of choices and very little real information to make decisions with. My goal, from the very beginning, has been to write the kind of lingerie blog I want to read... one that not only talks trends and fashion but can also dig a little deeper and discuss the lingering social and cultural issues that hover just beneath the surface. I hope my articles still resonate with you for those reasons. And even though the lingerie blogging landscape has changed beyond recognition since I started (most of the blogs that were around when I started have shut their doors), the last few years have produced the largest and most diverse group of lingerie bloggers that I've ever known. And I'm happy to call many of them my friends.

In the past five years, the blog has grown from being all about stockings (leave a comment if you remember Stockings Addict!) to a blog that deals with all facets of the lingerie industry. Diversity is and will continue to be one of the defining principles of The Lingerie Addict. My six columnists and I have covered lingerie from a diverse range of perspectives and we are all committed to expanding the blog's horizons even further. And I continue to be proud ofTLA's "No Body Snark" policy, as I believe it creates a welcoming environment while we tackle difficult and personal social issues.

Some days, I'm overwhelmed and amazed by how much people care for TLA. Between e-mails, tweets, and private notes on Facebook and Tumblr, I've occasionally answered hundreds of messages from all of you who share my passionate feelings about lingerie. And I appreciate that passion... this blog grewbecauseof your passion. You shared the articles and tweeted about us and talked about us on Facebook. I'm even more overwhelmed by how we've built a community of people here who believe that lingerie is for everyone regardless of size, budget, shape, ethnicity, or sexuality. The internet can be a difficult place, but all of you have madethisplace feel like home to me.

As of this month, TLA is read in more than 180 countries around the world. We get 150,000 visitors per month, and the blog's social media following is over 80,000 strong and growing. In the past couple of years, The Lingerie Addict has been featured on the websites for Vogue Italia, Time Magazine, The Today Show, Fox News and many more (that will never stop blowing my mind, by the way). And even though it may take a little longer now, I still try really hard to personally answer all the e-mails I get from readers.

Part of this week's celebration is a ton of giveaways, and you'll see those posts as they happen in the next few days. And the blog will also be getting a brand new look and a brand new logo to celebrate our fifth year. But those aren't all the plans I have in mind. In the next year, I'm looking at ways to make TLA even more interactive and create even more of a community space for all of you. I'm also looking at ways to expand our coverage of social issues and how they effect the lingerie industry, as I believe it's an important conversation to continue having.

Women tell me all the time how The Lingerie Addict has changed their life, but what I don't get to say as often as I'd like is how much all of you have changed mine. I've gone from crisis counselor to business owner, from confused consumer to The Lingerie Addict, and from living the life I had to to living the life I never dreamed I could have. Katie Peachesa of that could have happened without you and, at risk of sounding too sentimental, I truly don't have the words to say how grateful I am.

What I do have, though, as I mentioned, are some fabulous giveaways to say "Thank you!" TLA favorites like Kiss Me Deadly, Elomi, Farr West, and Love Claudette have all stepped up to celebrate the occasion with us and to give back to all of you who have given so much to me. And unlike previous giveaways, these are planned to cover lingerie lovers of all shapes and sizes, so hopefully there will be something for everyone. Good luck to all of you, and I can't wait to show you what's in store for Year 6!

With love and affection,

Cora

I am so glad to be part of this blog community. I look forward to me weekly emails and love all of the new lingerie you have helped me discover. Cheers to you and continued success!

Happy 5 years TLA :) Muah!

Happy Anniversary Cora! I just want you to know that your stand on body snark has had a huge impact on me. After reading your blog following the ‘tranny’ comment, I have even had the strength to tell other women making negative comments to think about what they are saying and why – even supposedly innocent comments about women in magazines. We change the world in small steps, and thanks to you, it’s spreading :-)

Happy Anniversary! Your blog is one that I immediately loved as soon as I stumbled across it–it is an honest, smart, and insightful conversation about something particularly feminine. I found this at a time in my life that my body was going through many changes…I was nursing my baby and adjusting to more curves in more places (and I was already a curvy lady!), and I was tired of reading magazines and articles telling me how to get my “pre-baby body back.” Instead, I was able to learn about lingerie made for my shape, as well as read so many of your intelligent articles exploring issues around how women and companies catering towards women portray beauty, strength, and sexiness. What a relief!

Happy Anniversary Cora! I too remember the Stocking Addict!

Happy Anniversary! Thank you for all you do!

Cora, you will never know how much you’ve helped me. As someone struggling on their own in America with many health issues and no insurance, my outlook on life has dulled a lot the past few years. Daily, your email updates and this blog have given me moments of peace and enjoyment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I wish many, many more special anniversaries and moments for you in this life. :)

Wow! Congrats. This is our first time here, ut not our last. We are lucky and happy to be able to celebrate this occasion with you.

Congratulations!!!

Thank you for creating such an interesting, diverse, and inclusive wonderful blog.

I think you’re a real pioneer in this field and some of the things you’ve started here, like the sense of community, “lingerie therapy” sessions, and many other things this blog has to offer are real mile stones and a role model for others.

Thanks!!!

Congratulations!

TheLingerieAddict is always the first blog I check when I start my internetting every day, and has been for a while. Thank you your obvious passion and dedication, and for putting such an emphasis on creating a body snark free space.

I love lingerie, and I’m so glad you love it too.

Yea! for remembering Stockings Addict

Cora, Happy anniversary and many more – It’s amazing to think now how far TLA has come, and take for granted all the hard work and growth. Also amazing to think back 5 years and where we all were in our lives and all the changes along the way, and all the blog milestones. Glad you’re able to carry the banner for all of us!

And don’t lose the current logo completely – find someplace to keep her around if you can ; )

Congradulations! and good luck with the next five!

This blog is the best, its probably the only fashion blog I’ve stuck with over a period of years and its still interesting/relevant and fun to read.

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary Cora!! Absolutely I remember the Stockings Addict!! :)

Wishing you many more anniversaries!!

Eric

Huge congratulations! It’s a big milestone and an important blog to many women and men xx

A very touching article. Congratulations!

Happy anniversary! and I do remember stockings addict :)

Reading your blog all see years has completely overhauled my views on lingerie. I came from “utilitarian whatever” to beautiful sets that I wear just to please myself. Happy 5th honey! You’ve worked so hard and it shows!

Congratulations!!

I started reading your blog around two years ago and I love it so much. I am actually kind of where you started, working in a 24-hour crisis service as a social worker and I’ve just started selling lingerie on the side through a direct selling company here in Australia.

I love that your not afraid to tackle the social issues within the lingerie industry and to talk about things that a lot of people just ignore. I’ve too often read blogs that contain body snark and are critical to either end of the wide range of female bodies and I love that this is a safe place for everyone, where no one will read that it’s no okay to be fuller-figured or that they need to eat a sandwich if they are more petite.

This blog is my favourite lingerie blog and you should be enormously proud of what you’ve achieved!

Here’s to many more years of TLA!

Congratulations on the five year milestone! I must admit, what keeps me coming back to TLA is not just the posts on pretty underwear (which I am pretty addicted to…) but your intelligent, astute and inclusive articles that explore the social and cultural contexts of those pretty things too. You have such a concise yet friendly tone, which I have always enjoyed. Here’s to many more years of the TLA!

I remember Stockings Addict :D
